Profile Info
« on: June 26, 2005, 08:11:37 PM »

I recenly changed my MSN messenger name.  I was able to delete the old one from my profile info fine, but I can't seem to be able to add in the new one.  When I type it in the space and click Change Profile, nothing happens; it just stays blank.  Am I doing something wrong, or is something else up?

That's very strange. Can you change any of the other IM client fields? If you want, I should be able to enter it for you, but I'd like to figure out why it doesn't work. Are you for sure logged in and stuff?

Yeah, I am logged in.  I just played around a bit with what it would let me enter or not enter.  It'll let me enter anything ending in "@msn.com", but I thought that space was for your msn nickname, not email address.  Before I changed it I had my old nickname in there and it worked just fine.  Now I'm confused.

It might be something in the upgrade. The msn messenger username is the full email address, afaik, so the SMF wizards may have made it so that it has to be that way. My MSN name is @hotmail.com, not @msn.com, and it lets me enter that.

Okay, see I was trying to add in just my nickname, which is potterskywalker101.  I can't do that?  I already have my MSN email added under email.

Erm ... I'm not positive, but I think it needs the full address. Can you log into your MSN with just the nickname, or does it take the full address?

Well, for mine I just have to click on my name.  It lists my nickname and underneath, in smaller letters, my email.  I don't know if that helps any.  But, before I changed it I had just my nickname there, not a full email address.  It worked fine then.

Hermmm. Did you have to do something special to get the nickname? Like sign up in addition to your msn account or something?

From support:

MSN names are not unique, so there would be no point in entering that, the only way to contact someone via MSN is using their passport email.

No, it just came with my MSN messenger.  You can type in anything and change your nickname anytime you want.

I think that is just the display name, then. The actual username is the email address, which is the only unique identifier and what people will need to find you online.
