Resources for making icons
« on: June 08, 2005, 02:07:36 PM »

I have some resources for instructions on making icons. I know there's more out there, so feel free to post your own.

First off, you need a good image editing program. Photoshop and JSC Paint Shop are both good, from what I've heard. But, if you're like me and don't like spending money, then I recommend the GIMP, which is similar to these other programs. It was originally written for Linux, but there are versions for Windows and Macs, as well.

There are plenty of tutorials and such out there on the web. Feel free to post your own. Also, over at LiveJournal, there are several communities that offer tutorials and guides for icon-making. There's the icon_tutorial community, for one. If you use the GIMP, there's also a gimp_users community. You don't actually have to join LJ to read the posts.

There are places out there that will host your images AND allow you to use them other places. Be careful, because not all places will allow this. Photobucket is one of the few places I know of that will allow this.

Also, please feel free to post questions, comments, advice, etc, in this forum.

Is there any kind of theme you want to the icons?  Like ships, humor, the trio, etc.?  Or is it going to be pretty much up to us?

Once we start the contest, I don't think I'll have any particular theme, unless something suggests itself. In general, though, do what inspires you. :)

As for bases, I don't have any of my own yet. (Once I borrow the roommies DVDs, though, I should be able to get some.) What I usually do is a google search on "harry potter" or another character, and then go to images and see what comes up. It's usually a good idea to have "safe search" on when you do this, because some people are sick. IMDB is also an okay resource, though depending on your browser, you may have to tweak it to be able to copy the image.

Do the icons have to be a fixed size? Like 100x100?
