Ships.... what else?
« on: April 08, 2005, 04:56:55 PM »

Okay, I know that this topic is well worn out everywhere, but I'm going to attempt to kick some life back into it yet again.

Based on clues in canon and various interviews with JKR, who do you think is going to end up together? Who do you want to end up together? Now please children, no bickering........

Obviously, you can tell from my pic that I'm an H/Hr shipper, and I believe that the canon backs me up 100%. The only thing that I think contradicts this is some of the interviews that Rowling had given. She's been noted giving hints that almost point in the direction of a pairing other than Harry and Hermione.  :'(

What do you guys think?

I'm a big fan of Ron/Hermione, myself. I like the dynamic they have together, and I think they "fit." Ron's relaxed attitude balances Hermione's rather anal attitude. Mix it up a bit and they might end up normal. :)

Other relationships: While Hagrid and Madame Maxime seem destined for each other, I still want him to get together with Pro. McGonagall.

Not sure about the rest, except that I REALLY don't want Ginny to end up with Lucius Malfoy, which has to be about the most disturbing ship idea I have EVER seen.

Yuck, now I'm going to be spending the rest of the evening trying to get the picture of them together out of my head. I've never had the misfortune to come across that rather distrubing ship before myself......

Other than H/Hr, the people I would like to see together are Hagrid and Maxime, Dumbledore and McGonagall, Ron and Luna, and Ginny and Draco. I think Ginny is much more suited for a Malfoy that's at least within 15 years of her age!

And the Ginny/Draco pairing is if Draco comes to the Order's side. Yeah, most people would say that's a fat chance, but I'm still hopeful. *crosses fingers*

Edit: I thought of another one! Lupin and Tonks, although it may seem a bit odd, would make a good couple in my opinion.

Yeah, sorry. Supposedly it was supposed to be when she's older, but STILL! *shudder*

Ginny/Draco seems pretty improbable, except that she IS pureblood, and Draco would REALLY have to change anyway. *shrug*

I would try and think of more, but the head is about to explode.

Like I said, I'm holding out hope for good Draco, no matter how improbable. I write fanfic,. and I know all my readers are getting sick of the "25 ways Draco can betray his father" stories. And even when Ginny's older, Lucius would still be like 30 years her senior!

I am probably the world's only Harry Potter fan who does not get into the ship discussion.  My first impression of the books were that they were kids stories.  This colored how I saw the first three books (which I read in one clip).  For that reason, I was oblivious to the ship question.  I actually was a little uncomfortable with the romantic allusions in the following books.  I know it sounds strange, but these parts of the books tend to be my least favorite.  I like the strong friendship of the three main characters being the focal point.  I share this not to rain on any parade, but to share that I always get nervous reading the ship discussions because I fear that the romantic relationships will tear apart the trio's bond.  I am afraid my reaction/feelings will be akin to losing a dear friend if that happens.

I absolutely agree with everything you just said, Heather. I can't stand discussion of ships, and romance is not something that I would care to see become a focal point in the books. I disliked the bits in OotP a lot, and JKR saying that there's going to be even more in HBP makes me nervous.

I understand and respect your opinion.  Though I do tend to get a bit shippy, I also want nothing to come between the trio.  I really hope that whether Hermione ends up with Harry or Ron, or anyone else, or any other relationship between the characters, it doesn't do anything to hurt their friendship.  That's why fanfic where Hermione ends up with either Harry or Ron and the other one hates them for it really bug me.

I also agree that the romance shouldn't be the focal point of the books.  That should always stay Harry, and his battle with good and evil.  The best example I can think of is how they did the romance of Han and Leia in Star Wars.  They added the romance stuff in there, but it wasn't real gushy or anything.  And it wasn't the focal point; that remained Luke and his battle with good and evil.  I believe that JKR can find a tasteful way to do a romance, and not hurt their friendship or anything.

i'm rather impressed, Christine, with your good guess about ... shouldn't say, incase someones not read the 6th  book but welldone! Giiny and Draco? no, i think dracos part in the last book will be his decision not his love life, very improbable indeed. hermione and ron are perfect, infact its rather amusing that i hav two friends just like them and im waiting for them to get together! harry and ginny might work but i dont know......

HBP spolier below, highlight what's in the quote box to read.

I read a fanfic with
Quote
Lupin and Tonks
together once, and I liked it.  Plus, I thought it was very probable.  I'm glad it worked out in HBP, the scene in the hospital wing was cute.

I'm rereading the series, and I just came across the name of Ron's village: Ottery St. Catchpole.
And Hermione's patronus is an otter.
Cuuuuuuuuuute.  :)

I like their relationship more reading the books than the movies - I don't know what it is, but I don't get any chemistry from the actors in the movies like I imagine in the books.

Who, R/H? I agree. As my sister pointed out, Emma seems to have more chemistry with Dan than with Rupert, and it comes out.

Look, let's face it. The kid who plays Ron is not attractive, and nothing like the books.  Ron is supposed to be tall, gangly, and have a long nose.  The kid that plays Ron is short, has a squashed up nose, not unlike Crookshanks', and is more than a little bit annoying.  Ron in the books has annoyingly low self esteem, but balances it with reckless happy-go-lucky charm.  Maybe the kid who plays Ron just got shafted, I dunno.
(Don't even get me started on Daniel Radcliffe's height.)

The "Ottery St. Catchpole" thing is definitely a nudge by JKR, as the place in Devonshire (prob. where the name came from) is actually `Sutre`, also known as St. Ottary, or Ottary St. Catch.  The "OTTERy" is an obvious misspelling, notoriously purposeful.

On a side note, if "Ron" grows up to look like Fred & George (movie version), I'd be all over him.  But then again, my family is all Scottish from head to toe.

James and Oliver are rather cute in person, but very quite.  I'm sure I talked James' ear off though.

Marold, you got to meet them? JEALOUS!  ;D

I agree with the stuff about Rupert.  And after seeing GoF, get the boy a haircut!  I like Dan a lot, though, and he's what I imagined Harry would look like.
