Paintings

I hope this topic hasn't been done already >< I wish I were more active here...
*ehem*
As paintings/portraits are basically another sort of "ghost" of the person who died (for example the headmasters in the Dumbledore's office), and who reflect the person's personality, why doesn't Harry just get a painting done of Sirius, James and Lily and carry THAT around?!?!
I know it wouldn't be the same as the physical presence, but at least he'd have them with him to guide him at all times.. No?

I think with the paintings, the person has to be alive while the painting is done in order for the magic to work properly.  Probably something to do with their personality.

Pro'ly because it's not cheap, just like today, and they can just get their picture taken. :)

I suspect a lot of the people who have had paintings done have had them for a specific reason, like the old headmasters, and other important wizards and witches.  You never know.  There could be some sort of restriction on them from the MoM, like needing to register to become an animagus.  (Not that James and Sirius took a lot of stock in those sorts of restrictions.  ;))

Another question--the Hogwarts paintings all seem to talk, but pictures don't. I wonder why?

Perhaps it's representative of the difference between photographs and portraits.  A portrait takes longer to produce, requires more care, more time on the part of the subject (they actually have to sit there), and perhaps captures more of the person.  A photograph just requires a quick 'snap' and the photo's taken, with or without the subject's knowledge.  Somehow, the portrait seems more complex to me, which is why it would make sense that only portraits talk but not photos.

I think there would have to be some kind of difference between paintings and pictures because not only do the paintings in Hogwarts talk, but the portrait of Sirius' mother talks too Never in the books have we come upon a photograph that talks.

Maybe the person having the portrait done can ask to have it specially charmed for a reason, like the portraits in Dumbledore's office helping future headmasters, Sirius' mother watching over her house, and the paintings lining the halls of Hogwarts directing the students. And maybe the charm only works on paintings, not photographs.

Good points, Cho and Christine. I'd forgotten about Sirius's mother's portrait.

10 points to Cerberus, Mad, Cho, and Christine, and 5 to Marold for the discussion. :)
