Ditto - POA was the last book that had a fairytale feel.  While it dealt with dark subject matter, it still had the light feeling from the first book.  GOF and OOP, in my opinion, turned more into adult books about children.  I still liked the story, but it lost some of the magical feel/feeling of discovery that I felt reading the first three.

There was something about POA that drew me into the series.  I don't know what it was, but it will always be a favorite of mine.

Three is definitely my favorite. I don't know how I'd rank the rest of them. It's like the original SW trilogy. Empire Strikes Back is the best, but I don't know which I like of the others, because they're so different from each other. If you see what I mean. :)

My favorite is book three, too.  It's the first time I've ever really laughed aloud at a book (as in, more than a ha ha.  More like a HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!) and it's also one of the fairly limited number of books that has made me cry.  And I wasn't pregnant when I read it, either!  :p

I also miss the lighter tone and more... I like the word "discovery" for the feeling of the first three.  I've enjoyed four and five, but they are rather different.  Maybe we'll get the lighter feel back.... for the last chapter of book 7.  ;)  Maybe JKR will write other children's books later that will have that delightful feeling to them.  *crosses fingers*

I'm one of the only to say this, but I like the 5th one the best. It's darker and more adult, I agree, but I thought it was really enticing. The huge draw for me were the scenes toward the end of the book when Harry's in Dumbledore's office after the DoM saga; I thought that was some of the best writing in the whole series.

It makes sense to me that the books should have a more mature feel as the series progresses because Harry is growing up. A book based on a 13 year old is going to be more fairy tale-ish than one based on a 15 year old, but I do understand people's reasoning for liking the first 3 better than GoF and OotP.

My order of favorites would have to be 5,3,4,1,2. See, I do like PoA. You lot don't have to hex me into next week.........

*flexes wand* We don't HAVE to... ;)

I think the difficulty most people have is that the series itself goes from being fairy-tale-ish to being more adult, not just in content, but in tone. Book three seems like a culmination of the previous books, the height of the magical kind of writing. Book four was something of a transition, and book five was a big jump into the more adult style. I agree that the scene in Dumbledore's office was really good, but it was good for a different reason and on a different scale. Does that make sense?

My favorite is 4 - 5, while my second choice was at times so dark that I would keep reading because I couldn't stand to stop it had me feeling so grim.  Although I have already read it 3 times, I wonder if I would feel differently re-reading now since it has been over a year.  The rest are 3, 1, 2.

If I were to choose a favorite chapter it would be chapter 1 of the 1st book - I still get chills when I read it.

Don't worry Ping, a fellow SW fan knows what you mean.  There are certain things you like in all of them, but there is one that stands out to you the most.
