JKR's newest hints - SPOILER!
« on: November 07, 2004, 05:23:43 PM »

If you haven't seen Shelly's post in the "Secrets of JKR's site" thread, then this thread may not be for you.  It is to speculate about the newest hint that she released behind the Do Not Disturb door.

I'll give you a few spoiler spaces to get out of this thread

Okay, presumably, everyone who's left wants to talk about it.  So the new clue tells us the names of three chapters in book 6:  Spinners End (no apostrophe; I checked) Draco's Detour and Felix Felicitis.

Anyone have thoughts on any of these things??

Spinners End makes me think of spiders, and sepcifically Aragog.  I wonder of Aragog dies there in book 6.  Draco's Detour ... I have no idea.

Felix Felicitis I presume is a new character.  Perhaps he's the new DADA prof, and maybe he's the one we got the description of earlier.

Thoughts??

Well that makes sense for "Spinners End," except that it's chapter two. I can't picture Harry running into Aragog in chapter two. Especially since chapter one is likely the death scene from Godric's Hollow. "Draco's Detour" makes me think of Malfoy breaking a rule or something. And Felix Felicis... sounds like a Latin name for "cat"... like a lion. It's obviously the character that the paragraph she released was about.

The quantity of consonants in the English language is constant. If omitted in one place, they turn up in another. When a Bostonian "pahks" his "cah," the lost r's migrate southwest, causing a Texan to "warsh" his car and invest in "erl wells."

Spinners End ... I dunno, for some reason I'm reminded of Alicia Spinnet, the Chaser. That's probably way off, though.

Draco's Detour ... there's a section of the site, I forgot where exactly (will try to find it again), which says that JKR once wrote a scene with Draco and Theodore Nott just talking to each other at Malfoy Manor. She also says that was one of her favourite scenes but took it out because it didn't really fit. So maybe Draco's Detour has something to do with that?

Felix Felicis ... no clue. Sounds a bit too weird to be a character's name, even by JKR's standards. Though ... *shrugs*

FF could be a charm or something.

Could be.  The latin translation for it is "happy cat."  The lion thing would work.  I don't know if it's too weird to be a character name, but I agree with Ping that it sounds like a spell or charm, mostly because of the latin thing.  That would be a strange charm, though.  Happy cat?

Maybe it means Crookshanks will make another appearance and play a larger role?

Either that, or we've finally found a mate for Crookshanks!  Er, on second thought, Felix is a boy's name.  Erg.   :-X Forget I said it.

Or maybe he found a mate and Felix is his competition ... for the ... girl cat ...

Okay, that is wayy farfetched. Love triangles among cats are far too weird. Nevermind.

Spinners End could be a street name.

You know what it reminds me of? The sphinxes' riddle in the third task. "always the last thing to mend, middle of middle, end of the end" and then it ended up being a spider? (i.e. "spinner") Probably doesn't mean anything, but I thought it was interesting.

Felix Felicis does sound a lot like a charm... maybe it has something to do with the fact that Crookshanks is part kneazle?
