So, what does anyone think Dumbledore has been writing to Petunia about before book 5??

Maybe .... maybe they had a long and platonic relationship of letters, and he finally broke it off when she offered to leave her husband, and he had to threaten her with a wizarding restraining order, and then that didn't work, so he had to threaten to throw her into Azkaban, which is how she knew about the dementors, and so he was just reminding her about them.

Or not. ;)

Well, it WAS a complete stab in the dark. :)

It could have been something as simple as him writing to tell her how Lily was doing.

I guess I find it hard to believe that, if he had written her letters before, he hadn't written one since he dropped Harry at her doorstep 14 years ago (or however long).

Y'know?

And I suspect it's more than that.  She threw it out there as a big hint, so there's got to be more than just simply telling her how Lily's doing.

As amusing as Ping's idea is ...

I think it's the letter he handed over with Harry, in the first book. Probably explained exactly why he had to go to stay with the Dursleys... that's why he mentioned it, it was like "remember why you can't kick him out".

Well, JKR says that that letter was Dumbledore's "last," which means that he had written to Petunia before that one, the one he left with Harry.  So the question is, why would he have written to Petunia before leaving Harry on their doorstep?
