New School Year
« on: August 03, 2004, 10:06:54 PM »

At the risk of being jinxed  ;D - Is everyone looking forward to the new school year?  and when do you start?

I know my stay at home dad husband is dancing around the house like the guy in the Staples add singing 'It's the most wonderful time of the year...'

Our 5th, 4th and 1st graders go back 8/26.

I'll be going into grade 12 in September! I'm looking forward to some of my classes but I don't particularly want to go back to school.

Ugggggh I'm starting 10th grade in September and I'm DREADING it!
The only thing I'm looking forward to is the look of surprise of all my friends who have no idea I'm coming back to London after a year in Hong Kong  >:D
Apart from that, I have a lot of patience: I'm not too enthusiastic about the idea of being dependant of a routine again.

I miss going back to school.  :'(

I have to work on getting student loans so I can hopefully go to school in the winter.

I really miss getting everything packed the night before, the excitement of seeing who's in my classes and stuff.  Yeah I'm weird, but I really really loved school.  Could be the social aspect of the whole thing.

Yeah, I want to go back but I don't. Everyone I know says high school held some of the best years of their lives, but they were popular, er, somewhat. I'm the biggest geek/nerd/ dork in my grade. I think it's just because I absorb info like a sponge, but that can't be held completely accountable.

I'm going into senior year in about 3.5 weeks. I'm not looking forward to it at all. For one thing, I'm not done with my summer homework. In fact, I've barely started  :P. also, I'm without a car, and the bus to my house just got canceled. It's looking like it's going to be quite an un-fun senior year.

Hmm...any class titled "novels" sounds like its got to be rough. Good thing you've only got 5 periods.

Good luck with that by the way.

Thanks. Novels doesn't sound hard: reading books as fast as you can while still getting the meaning. Jane Eyre is on our list...

Yeah, 5 periods. Each one is 70-80 min. long, and I have no idea when I have lunch. :-\

Deedra, don't believe that crap about high school being the best years of your life. Yes, there are great things about them, but I would never ever in a million years go back. Every year since high school has gotten better and better. College was leaps and bounds better, and being my own person, earning my own money, paying my own bills--nothing in high school, not the grades, the good test scores, the experiences, can ever compare to that satisfaction. There's so much more to life than high school, and I feel sorry for those who look back at it as the best time in their lives, because life has so much more to offer.

Erm, yeah. *hops off soapbox and shoves it under a table*

Amen!

Also, a "heads up" for those who are going into their last year:

Enjoy it.  Take time to smell the roses and all that rubbish.  Join in as many stupid corny social events as you can possibly find at your school.  I spent my entire last year STUDYING and now I wish I had gotten to know my fellow students a little better.  Especially now that my "afterlife" is so much better than theirs.

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!! >:D

Hmmm...*looks down corridor*...well...carrying on.

Yea, highschool, as much as im living it at the moment, isn't as cool as all that. Too much drama and mindless accedemia. I can't wait to get out of here and hit college. I'm sure the experience will be much better.

Speaking of which, are there any Alum's in the building with any bits of knowlage about their schools?

High School is manic - lots of highs and lots of lows and very little in between.  I just went to my (eek) 20th reunion and guess what - every one talked to each other, regardless of who they were friends with then - and a lot of the 'cool' ones from 20 years ago didn't show (wonder why?)

Ping's right - I would never go back.

I start back next Monday, and I am *so* excited. Nervous, but excited. But for all of you who are dreading it, wait until you're ancient like me and you have to drop almost FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS on your books. *sigh*

But if I could go back, I would.  I'd be a lot more efficient so I could have a lot more fun.
Then again, it seems like the older I get, the more fun I have.  ;D

Dude, you guys, I'm going insane. I swear I posted in this topic, I swear it. Didn't anyone read it? I remember what I said and everything. I came in here all ready to read all the responses to what I wrote, but instead I find I never wrote anything. I think I've finally lost my mind from being around you people too long.

Seriously, I totally remember being like, the 4th post in this thread. *dies*

Well, I guess I'll put in my two cents... again...

~*~*~

Ahhh!! You said the S-word!! My poor, untainted ears have been ruined with the filthy utterings of you savages! *runs in circles, foaming at the mouth*

J/K, J/K. I start my junior year in High School on September 8, but I'm also taking two 5-credit college courses at the same time, so you could sorta-kinda-not-really consider me a freshman in college, too. Here's my schedule. We normally have 6 classes, but since I'm doing the college courses through my high school, I only had to take 3. Since we're on a block schedule, with A days being periods 1,2,3 and B-days being 4,5,6, what this means is that I don't have to go to school until 9:00, and that on A-days I get to leave at noon.  ;D

Period 2: Advanced Computer Graphics
Period 5: United States History A
Period 6: Drama 2
Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:45-7:00: Japanese 101
Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:10-9:35: English 101

I'm actually sort of looking forward to the college part of it, but classes don't start there until September twenty-something, so I've still got over a month before I have to really get in the swing of things.

*looks around gloatingly at all the people that have to start tomorrow*

(BTW, the S-word was "school", in case anybody didn't catch that.  ;D)

I wouldn't say these are the best years of my life, but i'm still enjoying myself. Get involved! I'm into everything I can be. Extra-curriculars are where you meet all of the most fun people at your school ;). I'm on Students council this year as "green colour house captain"   I'm excited.

Ooh! Me! I'm starting college! *waves hand*

Well, I'm still a junior, but I enrolled in a program that lets me get college credit and HS credit at the same time. I can graduate with a two-year degree.

I'll be going to Olympic College. It's just a little community college in WA, but it's got a nice campus. Once I graduate I'm going to transfer to the University of Washington, or possibly Gonzaga.

I've never heard of Fordham University, Lauren. Where is it? What's your major? *absorbs the college talk in preperation for applying next year*

You think geometry is a pain, try 100 pages of Dostoyevsky every night. And i thought Crime and Punishment couldnt possibly be that bad.

AZ, I actually liked Crime And Punishment. How far are you into it? For the first 100 pages or so, I couldn't make it 5 or 6 pages without falling asleep, but it got better after it got going a little bit. I thought it might have been a little longer than it needed to be, but I still thought it was very interesting. Have you done the rest of the reading?

Sure, we've got a lot of APs, but I think it'll probably be better than last year, AZ. This year, engineering is an easy A, there's not a huge amount of new stuff to cover in calculus, physics with Fairly is just like naptime (passing the AP is what's hard), and according to what I've heard, Wolfe and Joe for english and government is easier than US history was last year. I don't think it will be easy by any means, but I don't think it will be impossible. And I personally thought 10th grade was harder than 11th, but only because I was doing Spanish Lit.

It's the applying to college that's freaking me out...  :-\

Oh, I don't think you're that far behind, not compared to certain other people, at least. I haven't done the notes yet, either.

At this moment, I still remain convinced that the college application stuff is going to be the hardest part of this year. At least the beginning of this year, anyways. I just have the feeling I'm falling behind on all that sort of stuff...

Crime and Punishment was one of my least favorite books EVER. I think it's brilliantly written, but I HATE Raskolnikov with the fire of a thousand suns. I wanted someone to beat some sense into him throughout most of the book. The only good part about the book was the last few pages. Not worth reading the rest of it for that final bit.

As I said, I think the writing is brilliant. That's why I feel so strongly about it--it's so well-written that I fcan detest the characters on so many levels. *sigh* I feel your pain, AZ! Just be glad you're not going to get dragged around St. Petersburg on a sprained ankle while someone babbles on in unintelligible Russian about why some of the buildings might have been the ones that Dostoevsky referred to.

Oh yea, thats my main complaint with the book. All of the characters need a good clout about the head and a "GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER! CANT YOU SEE THE OBVIOUS THING TO DO!?!?"

And its true, it is well writen, but so are alot of books i dont like. And the names and nick names and everything. Sweet cuppin' cakes! The translator even says in the first sentence of his intro that he didnt remove them on purpous, and i just wanted to smack him!

I dunno, for me, compared to a lot of the other characters in the book, Raskolnikov wasn't so bad. Sure, he might have needed a bit of sense knocked into him, but at least his view on crime was something to think about, whether anyone would ever agree with it or not. I don't know, I guess I'm not really that great at explaining it. Oddly, I thought the ending was the worst part of the book (except for maybe the beginning) - it seemed to climax about 100 pages before the end, so for the last pages or so, I just annoyed it hadn't ended yet. I didn't realize my opinion of the book was so different from everyone else...  :-\

School tomorrow! Oh my goodness I'm terrified. Out of nowhere I've just started worrying about like everything. Applying to university, homework, having no time!! Yikes. *crosses fingers* I sure hope this year goes well.

I think a lot of the "classics" we read in high school were well-written, but I hated the characters and I hated the plots. Just because people can use the language doesn't mean they do so to create things I want to read!

Arg. I need to get ready for work, but all my clothes are still in the dryer, which has decided that it doesn't really need to ever dry anything the first time through.

LOL, Ping. I think your dryer has joined the appliance rebellion that all mine have signed up for.

First day today, but it's okay. (Good start to a song, that is. ^_^) School doesn't start for juniors and seniors until noon, though, because of sophomore orientation. The only thing I'm nervous about is how I'm getting to school this year. I have proved myself incapable of getting a driver's license. Erg.

It took me a lot more driving than driver's ed to really learn how to drive, and a second go at the driver's test to get a license. I was totally nervous for my first few years behind the wheel. I still am to an extent, but I've shed a lot of that driving around the DC area. People here is CRAZY!

I just got my drivers permit to start learning to drive. I've been around a parking lot and up and down my driveway. Haha I'm never going to catch on to the whole driving thing. I go too fast. Oops :P

First day of school was terribly dull, but these last 2 days were a million times better. I'm taking a Film Studies class as well as a Film Making (comm tech) class. I've never been in school and enjoyed it so much, those classes are fabulous. In History class all we've done so far is watch the movie Ladyhawke. Try and tell me what that has to do with history, 'cause I haven't got a clue.

Deedra, when you're done with Jane, you might enjoy The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. Too funny by half. :)

I hate Proofs. What more can I say?

Proofs are my personal torture. I hate them with the burning intensity of a thousand suns. I only had to do them for the one year, in eighth grade, but even the mention of them now makes me shudder. I feel your pain.

College classes start Monday. I'm excited. ^_^

Proofs aren't all that bad (I got 102% on that test).

Thanx for the book recomendation, Ping. I'll check into that.

AZ, how's Crime & Punishment goin' for ya?

*cough* I don't have one yet. Right now I'm just building up some credits, and (most of all) getting three times as many high school credits. Each quarter at college is worth an entire year of High School credits. I'm not exactly sure yet, what my major will be... maybe Graphic Design or Drama. I suppose I should get a move on figuring that out, eh? ^^;;

Oh... wow. Congratulations. I did okay on proofs, IIRC but not nearly that well, and I still hate them. Augmented Matrices in Pre-Calculus were even worse. I shudder to think what Calculus has in store for me.

Calculus can be easy or hard. Simple differentiation and intergration is like a game almost. But sometimes it just gets all muckity-muck with steps and what not.

Crime and Punishment is done. and i hated it. I read "A Prayer for Owen Meaney" after that. It was ok. Schools started, and the esssay on the summer asignment is already turned in (it wasnt very good.)

Don't be too quick on deciding a major. It takes time. I changed several times before finally settling on what I wanted to major in, but I'm now hardly using it in my job. Things change.
