Secrets of JKR's new site
« on: May 19, 2004, 12:00:53 PM »

So, since there are obviously things to "discover" at JKR's new site, I thought we could start a thread where we could reveal how to use the site, discover things, etc.  For those who want to find these things yourself, this thread will have MAJOR spoilers, so be warned.  For this first post, I'll give you some room so that you can read this portion but not see anything else.  Ready?  Get set.  Go!

Okay, so to start us off:

1)  Ju already told us the number to punch into the cell phone.  I'd still like to know how she found that out.

2)  What's with the light switches?

3)  What's with the door and the do not disturb sign?

4)  What's with the radio?  Anything?

5)  At one point, the pen cup on the desk was knocked over, but I couldn't move anything, so I went off to some part of the site.  When I came back, the pen cup had uprighted itself.  Any significance?

I found a feather on the links page that I apparently picked up, but it wasn't there when I went back and it's not in my scrapbook and I have no idea what to do with it.

I find the mirror with the candle and other doors very intriguing.

Also, does anyone thing the spider, fly, and butterfly/moth are catchable?

Alright my fine friends.  I have a spoiler.  I know I'm not smart enough to do it all myself, and since I never would have figured out the cell phone: there's an eraser on the extra stuff page.  Use it on the blank sheet of paper.

I believe that answers your catchability question at least with regard to the spider.....

I don't know.  There are several spiders, and I've given them some really good tries and haven't caught one yet.  I'm wondering if there's another one somewhere.  One that has to do with the light switches maybe?

Okay, I've caught every one of the bloody things shown and nothing.  Nada.  Zip.

Perhaps we've got to do it in the order suggested?  That's what Prof. Snape would want..... ::)

Somebody try that, please, and report back... I'm too doggone tired and I'm going home for the evening.

Also Mad, WHERE on the links page did you find the feather?

Are you sure you've got everything?  As soon as I collected the last item, I got one of those certificate thingies for my scrapbook, and I didn't collect them in order.  The last thing I got was the flask.

If you haven't got the feather yet, then you don't have everything.  The feather is on the book/trophy shelf, I believe.

I'm confused.

Anyway, about the cell phone: if you look at a normal phone, you'll see that the numbers would spell out MAGIC (the corresponding letters, that is). Pretty nifty, huh?

edit - Ooh. Now I get what you guys are talking about.

Main page. Wait a while, there'll be a spider on the newspaper. It doesn't move too fast, so just be careful and you'll get it.

Okay, I must just be really pathetic, then.  I'll go try again.  Every time I try to get it on the newspaper I get News.  Argh!  Do you have to get it on the newspaper?

I don't know if you have to get it on the newspaper, but that's where I got it.  It was the only place it stopped long enough for me to get it.

Okay, I've gotten a grand total of four things.  Some of them say they are page two or page four or something, so I wonder if there are other pages of doodles and drawings.  How's everyone else doing?

Yeah, I've got four things as well.

I think there's got to be something with the locked door (the one with the Do Not Disturb sign hanging on it).  The reason I say that is because of the question mark that pops up when you roll your mouse over the portkey.

If you go to the fansite that JKR gave her first award to, you'll find that several people have suggested that the locked door has something to do with Book 6 or 7, and that there IS no way to open it......yet.

BTW, does anyone else find it strange that the Do Not Disturb sign is on the side of the door leading to the OUTSIDE??

Yes, you do.  The best way to do it, I've found, is to move your mouse arrow to the top-right edge of the newspaper (but not ON it) and wait for the spider to stop.  Count to 2, then quickly and carefully make your move.

Might the bugs be a sly reference to Rita Skeeter? ^-^

About the bugs.....I think most of them are mouse-toys, meaning they are NOT catchable.  They are coded to move whenever your arrow gets close.  JKR (or whoever designed the site) seems to like putting in bits and pieces of web "magic" to enhance the ambience of the site.  Ditto the radio and the light switches, and the fact that if you visit the site at night (no matter where you are in the time zone, pretty neat) the windows will show that it is night outside.

Also ditto the watch on the desk:  it shows your time, whatever time zone you are.  Pretty cool indeed...

Oooh, that is cool.

Okay, I caught the spider after I tried again.  And I hadn't thought about the door going outside.  Hmmmmm.

Cho, you probably figured this out, too, by now, but when the pen cup was knocked over it was Peeves.  At the same time there was a really big, weird looking bug (which I tried to catch but couldn't) that flew by, and the face on the watch turned into a dart board.  ....  Why do I feel like I've said this before?  Maybe I was telling someone online yesterday.  Anyway, I tried clicking on the watch face and it didn't do anything.  I wonder if some things happen on the site only at certain times?  I'll have to set an alarm and come back at midnight sometime.  *sigh*

No, Mad, I hadn't figured that out, yet.  I've never seen the pen cup knocked over since that one time.  I haven't seen the weird looking bug, either.

Anyone notice the background sounds?  There's a doorbell that goes off all the time.  Any thoughts on that?

dunno about that, I thought about it when I got to the "?" part.
Otherwise I found something in the fan's website page you have to put the round things in the boxes. The drawing you get on the white paper is interesting so basically all I understood is that you have to get a bug a feather,  and two other things ( can't remember) and put it on the "? " page, talking about that page, I found peeves there, I just had a message on the mirror saying "Peeves wos ere", the flower pot fell, and the mirror looks a bit like the mirror of erised because it shows an open door, when you want the door in front of you to open.

Oh, and you know you get some sort of commercials when you read the newspaper, one of them said Fudge had to run away and wasn't the minister of magic anymore.

OOO!  I hadn't noticed that!  **charms Louise**

I hear Peeves come in every little bit and see the mess he leaves behind.  Has anyone ever seen Peeves on this site?

Maybe it's a timed cookie.  I HATE those! but they seem to be popular with webspinners.  Basically it means that you have to wait a certain time after you first click onto the site, then visit the site regularly (once a day, perhaps) and THEN it starts showing its stuff.  A friend of mine did that for the X-Men "X-perience" site.  It might still be up, I dunno.  I'll check and you'll see what I mean.

Oooh, check every day, eh?  And I hadn't noticed the open door either!  But as for the bug, feather, bottle, and leaves, if you get them all it gives you another page for your scrapbook.

The radio keeps turning itself on while I'm there, too.  The only thing it made me think of was the part where JKR said that loud music in a cafe was the only thing that could bother her when she's writing, but I can't turn the music up or anything.

So... when Peeves comes through on the door page he leaves a door open??  Hm.....  *goes to the site*

Also, has anyone ever had the phone ring?  I have, twice.  Once I got there to answer it in time, and the other time I didn't.  The time I did I heard a woman on the other end saying, "Hello?  Hello?" but I don't think I could do anything.

Does anyone else think the publishers in Ukraine sound really odd?  ;)  I think it's a clue for something, but I can't imagine what.

I got the phone call, too. 10:17 pm last night. I wish I could have talked to the caller.

Interesting note - at night, it's moths instead of butterflies, and there are no flies about. I haven't seen Peeve's destruction of the door/hallway yet, but I'm going to keep checking.

I'm positive the Ukraine publisher is the incantation we'll need to make use of the potion ingredients...

You need no incantation to make use of the potion ingredients.  As soon as you collect all the ingredients, you'll discover what they do.

Well I just found something in the library, you know where there are all these publisher's adresses, you take the key and use it to open the box on the left. But maybe you already saw that?
