Patronus Composition Contest
« on: July 09, 2004, 03:18:08 PM »

Alright, kiddies, here's your chance to keep your composition skills honed between now and next school year!  And for all us old fogies around, here's a chance to pull them out of the college memorabilia box and dust them off!

This is a new contest.  Every week I will name a character.  Your job is to write a (brief) composition describing what you think their Patronus would be and why.  Compositions will be considered based on creativity, style, grammar, spelling, and ... um... being well-thought-out.  Okay, bad grammar!  Sorry!

You have until next Saturday night, midnight (site time) to PM or email me your composition.  Thank you.

If you have any questions, I will address them here.

This week's character:

Justin Finch-Fletchly (most noted in CoS, Hufflepuff, Harry's year)

Saturday, as in July 10th, or July 17th?  ???

Also, when will you announce the winners? On the next day (Sunday)?  ???

I meant the 17th.  I figured that would give us an extra couple of days to answer any questions.  And I will probably post the winners on Monday, not Sunday.  (Religious observance.)  Each contest should last about a week.

I just want to see what other people put for Justin's patronus ;)

My sincerest apologies for the delay.  It's hard to choose a winner!  I received submissions from Deedra, Morgan, Permlessgirl, and Angelina, who will all receive five points.

Winning first place, with an additional 15 points is Permlessgirl.  I will post her entry here:

Quote
In my opinion, the Patronus of Justin Finch-Fletchly would be a mongoose. It appears that a Patronus is basically the embodiment of the positive thoughts of the caster. Unfortunately we don’t know enough about Justin to assume what those positive thoughts might be. However, we do know that Justin has been through some traumatic incidences involving snakes. He was threatened by one at the Dueling Club and was also petrified by the Basilisk. I'd assume that surviving both of these occasions would be somewhat of a triumph for a wizard like Justin. The mongoose is known as one of the only animals capable of defeating a cobra, and if Justin’s positive thoughts were to include his survival, a mongoose seems highly probable. On another note, a mongoose also resembles a badger. Justin belongs to Hufflepuff, which I also believe would be a dominant happy idea to him.

For an additional ten points, second place goes to Morgan Granger.  Her composition follows:

Quote
Justin Flinch-Fletchly's Patronus should be a mouse. Your Patronus should in some way represent who you are. Mice are scared of snakes - and, in some way or another, so was Justin!

Mice also are oftentime's eaten by snakes as well. To compare to this, Justin was Petrified by the basilisk in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. When a basilisk kills someone, it is kind of like eating it. There is nothing closer to being killed than being Petrified.

Mice, however, are also very clever. Although several Hufflepuffs, along with Justin more or less, thought that Harry was the Heir of Slytherin, they are clever enough to figure out many wise decisions by themselves. After all, wasn't Justin smart enough to not peer around Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington, but rather instead, just look through him?

Your Patronus is supposed to protect you. While a mouse may seem like they are worthless little rodents, perhaps you should think again...if a mouse is smart enough to know just how to get into your home and go after your food scraps, shouldn't they at least be smart enough to know how to fight of a couple of dementors?

While it is important for one to be brave, to be brave with no brains makes you worthless. You need brains to know how to use your brawn. Take a moment and think about what I've just said. Now, let's put this into real life. In order to be a great American Football Player, you have to know the plays in order to do them, right? If you've never played football in your life, but you're great at playing some other sport, like swimming, then you'd better stick with swimming, as football would do you know good.

How does this relate, you ask? Easy - the mouse will fight off the dementors with it's brains - not it's eensy little body.

After this description, I'm positive that Justin's Patronus should be a mouse.

Thanks for all your submissions.  The next contest:

Oooh neat. Could you tell us what the others suggested as Justin's Patronus? I like seeing all the different ideas.   :)

Gladly.  I'll just sum up.  Deedra suggested a raccoon, because Justin wasn't very trusting and couldn't seem to keep himself away from situations.  Angelina suggested a horse, because he needed something big to protect him and horses are graceful, which is the impression Justin gives her.

Okay, I'm making the deadline tonight at midnight because... that way if anyone forgot and still wanted to enter s/he could.  :D  (Look, that's correct grammar!  I think....)  Also because, although there are currently only three entries, I'm having a hard time deciding.  :p  Winners should be up tomorrow along with a new character (and a due date!  :P)

Thanks, everyone, for playing!

Right now!

This time I received entries from Deedra, Morgan, and Tiamat, who will all receive five points.

This round's winner, earning an extra fifteen points, is Tiamat.  Her entry follows:

Quote
Arthur Weasley’s patronus is a monkey. They are insatiably curious, and will attempt to use or take apart anything that comes into their sight, be it computer, toaster or anthill. Whether they’ll actually be able to comprehend it is another story. They live in large, close family packs, but there’s only one alpha male, thus the refusal to back down in the argument with Percy. Monkeys may seem cute and harmless, and their antics lead people to think they’re buffoons, but they’re very smart and will react dangerously if they or members of their group are threatened or cornered. Small animals, such as Malfoys, have been known to be torn apart by raging, protective monkeys.

Coming in second, although it was very close, is Deedra.  She has earned an extra ten points.  Here is her entry:

Quote
I believe that Arthur Weasley's Patronus should be a pig.

Can I quote?

"... the pig is frequently regarded as unclean and even untouchable by many people." Compton's Encyclopedia

This is the case with Arthur. Wizards who find themselves superior to others, such as the Malfoy's, are considered the "people". Because Arthur (+ family) are not the wealthiest of wizards, they are regarded and mocked.

Despite the horrible reputation, pigs have proved smarter than dogs. In this case, we'll call the dogs "Lucius" and "Cornelius". The pig will, of course, be "Arthur".

Pigs are often bothered by parasites, inside and out, but they are able to prevail over the unseen evil. In Arthur's case, everyone in league against the Ministry and his family.

Sows are very protective over their young. (This is from personal experience.) Arthur is very protective over his family, and others close, such as Harry and Hermione.

Can Patronuses jump the gender barrier? This one can.

Pigs are also a source of food. We're not going to cut Arthur up and eat him. this is meerly symbolizing the sacrifices he has or will make for his family and those he loves.

For those interested, Morgan suggested Arthur's patronus should be a bear.

All the entries were well-written and creative.  Just as a note, please watch spelling and grammar, as that will effect your score.  Also, please understand that when judging creativity I have to be subjective.  I've really enjoyed reading all your responses so far.  It's been delightful.

This week's contest character is Cornelius Fudge.  Please submit your entries by midnight on August 12, 2004.  (That's EST, just like the board.)  Thank you!

Hey!  I resent that implication!  It's MY fault there are two Slytherin winners, but once I noticed it I had already decided, and I was too honorable to change it.  :P

...  Besides, it didn't get you ahead in the House Cup.   >:D   :P

By the way, I've only received one entry, and the deadline is tomorrow night!  If you send me one, you might have a 50% of winning!!!

I said I'd post today, and today I will post!

After MUCH deliberation, the winner for this ... um ... week's? contest is Kelpie, for a total of 20 points.  Here follows her composition:

Quote
Cornelius Fudge's patronus would be a male lion.

First look, the male lion: he appears to be a powerful animal, after all, he is the leader of the pack. But in the fact, it is not really him who keeps the pack alive, it is the lionesses. They go do the hunting, "raise" the cubs, protect the land... keep everything running, while the lion stays at "home", lying around. He has to chase other male lions out of the pack, to make sure that no other lion will try and become leader.

Second look, Cornelius Fudge: he is the Prime Minister, he is powerful and has control over most of the other wizards. But it is the employes of the Ministry of Magic who infact are the ones who do all the work, hwile he didn't even try to recall the banished giants, or get rid of the dementors. He is weak, he thinks that he is control of everything, yet he is terrifyed of other powerful wizards, who he knows are powerful enough to take his place. He had turned Albus Dumbledore into something of a criminal, had exiled him from his presence, because he thought that Dumbledore wanted to have a shot as being the Prime Minister.

So, I find that they are quite similar: altough the lions seem to be noble and powerful creatures, they are just lazy and cowards.

(No offensewhat so ever to gryffindors, I think that lions are very beautiful creatures, and the lionesses are great anyway.)

In second place this go round is Permlessgirl, for 15 points.

Quote
I think that the Patronus of Cornelius Fudge just might be a Turkey. Ben Franklin once argued that the Turkey ought to be the national symbol of America because, although they were “vain and silly”, they were better than the eagle. So like the Turkey nearly was, Fudge was placed in a position of power he probably shouldn't have been. Turkeys are also not the brightest of birds and they are easily hunted down. While Fudge struts around rather professionally he is easily fooled and has been mislead multiple times by the people around him.

Also contributing were Deedra, who suggested Fudge's patronus should be a squirrel, and Cerebus who suggested a rooster.  I have to say, out of all of the suggested patronus forms, I like the idea of a rooster the best.  In addition to being proud, jealous, irritating, stupid, and hard to get rid of ;) as Cerebus said, roosters are also aggressive, and have been baited into fighting each other by their owners.  Cock fighting has been outlawed in most places, but still exists in some places, and I can just see Lucius quietly putting his little bantam Fudge into the ring with that quiet, malicious smile of his.

Well, 5 points to each of our contributors.  Thank you!  I really am enjoying reading your ideas.  We've got a neat group of creative people here.

Since I haven't been very prompt with posting winners (my apologies) I'm not going to make a hard and fast deadline after which I won't accept entries, but I will say I would like them by midnight on August 24th.  This week's character is Madam Hooch.
