*does her best Ollivander impression* Ash and dragon heartstring, 12 3/4 inches. An almost incompatible blend. Been trying to re-shelve it for months but it refuses to sit well with other wands.

*snicker*

Mine is 13", Ailanthus, Phoenix feather core

You can also find it in Harry Potter and the Golden Snitch Girl in Flourish & Blotts. I had to go look it up.  :D

Do any of you happen to know what's another name for the Ailanthus?  ;)

Very nice Tiamat. I like.

Mine's not very wippy, but it likes transfiguration and hexes. What can I say? It picked me (after 400 years on the shelf).

Ahem. *pulls out a sheet of paper*

Ailanthus altissima: Tree-of-heaven, also known as Chinese sumac, and stinking shumac, is a rapidly growing, deciduous tree in the mostly tropical quassia family (Simaroubaceae) Mature trees can reach 80 feet or more in height. The wood of ailanthus is soft, weak, coarse-grained, and creamy white to light brown in color.  All parts of the tree, especially the flowers, have a strong, offensive odor, which some have likened to peanuts or cashews.

Tree-of-heaven is a prolific seed producer, grows rapidly, and can overrun native vegetation. Once established, it can quickly take over a site and form an impenetrable thicket. Ailanthus trees also produces toxins that prevent the establishment of other plant species. The root system is aggressive enough to cause damage to sewers and foundations.

*pauses for breath* I dunno, this sounds like a Slytherin tree to me... ;)

((BTW- no I didn't pull this out of my head, though I was a plant freak at one point. The full site is http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/aial1.htm  for loads more useless info))

Nice description Tia. No, it's a Gryffindorish tree.  ;)

*pulls out Tree Identification Manual for Nebraska*

What? Everyone around here has one...anyway....

Quote
SIMAROUBACEAE - Quassia family

Contains 32 genera and about 200 species. Chiefly tropical and subtropical.

Tree-of-Heaven * Ailanthus (Ailanthus altissima)

General: Native to China (not Nebraska) but becoming naturalized over much of the eastern U.S. Starts readily from seed that is scattered by wind, and from root sprouts. Thrives under almost any type of condition, especially, harsh, urban conditions. Resistent to smoke and gases, difficult to get rid of. Shade intolerant.

Leaves: Alternate; pinnately compound; 1' to 4' long with 11 to 41 leaflets; leaflets 3" to 6" long, smooth-edged except for 1-2 teeth near base; bad smelling when crushed. (NOTE: Trust me, it smells extremely bad - once when I was working on my book of leaves for the State Fair, I got a leaf and crushed it - stunk the house for a year!)

Twigs: Very coarse; velvety or downy; brown pith. No terminal bud; lateral buds round, brown, normally hairy, relatively small.

Fruit: Oblong samara; spirally twisted wing in center of which is a single, dry seed; normally occurs in great abundance.

Bark: Thin; gray; smooth; becomes slightly furrowed with age.

Wood: Unimportant; little information is published; light colored; brittle.

Directly from my manual. I guess you can't understand it too much unless you've been in the tree buisness a long time... Anyway, that's my blurb about trees.  ;D

Ok....I think all of that got to my head...Anyways, my wand is Phoenix Feather, Maple, 7 1/2 inches, if anyone's intered. It's actually very similar's to Lauren's, I noticed, which seemed to be maple and pheonix feather, 12 inches.

Hey, will you look at that! My wand just broke. Well, it's ok, I never really was that fond of it. I'm not sure it was the wand for me, because when i bought it, well, Olivander was sick, and so he had this replacement kid in there, who I don't think knew that much about wands...Anyways, I got a newe wand, which works marvels with me. It's willow, 14", and contains the single hair of a kelpie's tail.

Hopefully the person who got that hair of a Kelpie was good at Placement Charms.  Or else...  :-\ well, they'd be in the Kelpie's stomach, let's leave it at that.  :o

I have a pet kelpie which I've domesticated (is that a word?) (don't ask how, it's too complicated a story), well, he's house trained and all, and I let Mr. Olivander take one of his hairs a couple of years ago so it was probably my pet's.

Dragon heart-string and bristle-cone pine.  13 inches long.  Light, but very, very strong.  Likes
