Tri-Wizard Tournament
« on: July 01, 2004, 07:49:11 PM »

Welcome to Hogsmeade's First Tri-Wizard Tournament.  Will you be your house's champion?

Procedure of the Tournament:

The first Tri-Wizard Tournament will run By the end of the day on July 6, submit your name to the "Goblet of Fire" by posting your name and intention to compete in the tournament in a response to this post.

Starting each Wednesday, you will have 5 days to PM Heather that you are ready for your test.  Each round of tests will be progressively more difficult, and will qualify for more points.  You cannot advance to a higher round without competing in the prior round.  At the end of the 5 days, the results will be posted.  For non-competitors in the tournament, points will be awarded for PMing Heather tests/questions which are used in the tournament.

When you PM Heather that you are ready for your test, she will PM you the test for that round within 12 hours of your request.  You will have 24 hours to complete the test.  If you fail to complete the test in 24 hours, you will receive negative points for your house.

The tournament will have 5 rounds.  At the end of the tournament, the Tri-Wizard Champion will receive an additional 20 points for his/her house.  Second place will earn 10 points for their house.

All work must be your own.  You must solve all of the problems by your self.  If you are found to have cheated by sharing questions or answers, you will cost your house - 20 points.

Please feel free to PM Heather suggestions for the tournament.  It is a work in progress, and can always be improved upon.

Do we pm you our intention to compete in the tournament, do we submit it here, or is it not completely necessary?

OK, I have a question. Will each house have only one champion? Because in that case I think it had better not be me. I'm going on vacation the 15th, and I'll have fairly limited internet access. I'll still be able to do it, but if there's only going to be one Gryffindor Champion, it shouldn't be me.

For this Tri-Wizard Tournament we will not be limiting each house to one champion.  As the tournament evolves, that may be something we do for future tournaments, but for this tournament, everyone competes.

OK thats cool. I have more questions though.

Am I to assume that as long as you submit an answer, even a wrong answer, you can move on to the next round? Say you find the correct answer. I assume you get points towards the Tournaments Standings just like in the book. Do those points also go towards the House Cup, or is the only time this tournament effects the cup when the winner and runner up recieve their 10 and 20 points? If you give the wrong answer, or tell you we can't find the answer, do we lose points in the standings, or stay the same? Or do we also lose our House 20 points in the Cup? Does the person who submits the correct answer first get more points, or does everyone get the same amount of points as long as they give the correct answer?

Are these "tests" just going to be Trivia questions, or something else?

Am I to assume that as long as you submit an answer, even a wrong answer, you can move on to the next round? Say you find the correct answer. I assume you get points towards the Tournaments Standings just like in the book.

Wrong answers will not keep you from progressing from round to round.  Doing well in the round gives you points towards Tournament Standings.

Do those points also go towards the House Cup, or is the only time this tournament effects the cup when the winner and runner up recieve their 10 and 20 points?

Both - you will receive a small number points (credited to the House Cup) and towards your running total in the tournament.  The winner and runner up will receive additional points.  One warning - do not compete if you are worried about creating a divisor for your house in the House Cup because if you do well in the tournament, you have the potential to earn more than 20 points.

Stating you can't find the answer or don't know the answer will not lose you any points.  Giving the wrong answer will not result in lost points.  Failing to answer a question/failing a test within 24 hours of requesting it will lose points.  I had thought about awarding more points based on how quickly you could submit a correct answer, but my fear is that there may be a delay between when a test is requested and when I send out it which would make this unfair.  For now, all correct answers count the same until I can figure out a way to fairly reward those who answer more quickly.

The "tests" may be more than simple trivia questions.

Thanks Heather.  ;D

Oh, idea! Maybe instead PMing you to start the test, you could PM all the Champions at the same time on Wednesdays, and they have five days to answer? Then you could give more points to those who answer first.

Notice To All Competitors

You may start on your first test beginning at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday (according to the date and clock on this site).  Please PM me when you are ready to be sent your test.  I will check in periodically, but for those outside the U.S. please keep in mind the time difference when you PM me (i.e. if you PM me when it is the middle of the night here, it may be a few hours before I get back to you).

Good luck!

P.S. We may try Lauren's idea for round 2.

I had thought about awarding more points based on how quickly you could submit a correct answer, but my fear is that there may be a delay between when a test is requested and when I send out it which would make this unfair.  For now, all correct answers count the same until I can figure out a way to fairly reward those who answer more quickly.

Well, I have a couple of questions - first of all, I hope you won't do the above, because I know that it wouldn't be fair for those on the other side of the world...  ::) Also, some people can't be on at certain times, or past certain times and such.  ;)

Another question - what if we know we're going to be gone, or we know we can't get on for a day to PM you the answers? Is there any way that we can, say, delay it for 12 hours or something like that?

The reason you can request your test at a time convenient to you is meant to allow you the flexibility to request it at a time when you can devote your attention to the test.  The 24 hours to complete the test is intended to give you time to respond in the event there is a delay of a few hours from when it is sent and when you log on.  I am going to check in every hour to two hours (and I have my e-mail set up to receive the PMs directly) to try to catch everyone.

Now, does the first challenge start today?  As in we can PM you today to get our test?  And we have a total of 24 hours to complete it from ... when?  From when we request it or when we get it?  In one case it would be better to request it first thing in the morning, nearly, and in the other, last thing at night so you'll get the request first thing in the morning and send it out.  :p

Gosh, Heather, I'm sorry!  What a lot of nitpicking and rule-mongering this is generating!   :-[  But it is a little hard to understand the first time around.   :)

NO problem - I like the questions.  The tournament is a work in progress.

The Results of the First Test in the Tri-Wizard Tournament

The first test for our champions was to identify the individual mentioned in one or more of the books only by his first name who, based on clues in Order of the Phoenix, may be the father of a member of the Order.

The champion who successfully completed the test was Kelpie.  She earned 10 points by identifying Ted, the news reader in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.  He shares his first name with Ted Tonks, father of Nymphadora Tonks, a member of the Order of the Phoenix.  There are a lot of really interesting theories on the net speculating that Ted the news reader is Ted Tonks.

The passage in Philosopher's Stone which mentions Ted is in Chapter One (page 12 of the soft cover UK version of the Philosopher's Stone) reads:

Quote
"And finally, bird watchers everywhere have reported that the nation's owls have been behaving very unusually today.  Although owls normally hunt at night and are hardly ever seen in daylight, there have been hundreds of sightings of these birds flying in every direction since sunrise.  Experts are unable to explain why the owls have suddnely changed their sleeping pattern."  The news reader allowed himself a grin.  "Most mysterious.  And now, over to Jim McGuffin with the weather.  Going to be any more showers of owls tonight, Jim"

"Well, Ted," said the weatherman . . . .

Everyone did a great job in the competition.  None of the champions lost points for their house.  Everyone who attempted the first test is eligble to proceed to the second test.  You can PM me your request for test starting on Wednesday.  Once you receive the test you have 24 hours to PM me your response.

A hint for the second test - brush up on your Harry Potter cuisine.

*trembles in abject fear* Dude, I read about Ted Tonks, but I totally overlooked the weatherman. I wonder if I totally imagined the line I couldn't find in OotP. Probably. *shakes fist at imagination*

See, I was thinking that the one-named character never had more than one name. Like, we see the first name and something about him, and then that same something later. Guess I was overthinking it a bit, eh?

Next time, I think I'm going to take my question over a weekend. It's hard to lose 9-10 of the hours to working and commuting.

Strangely, for me, well, the first time I searched, I looked around for about 2 hours, and I found nothing. The next day, in the morning, not at 2am like before, I searched for 10 minutes, and I found it. I gess a lot of the searching also counts on if you're awake or not.

*bangs head on wall* I thought of the weatherman....but when you said firstname only, I thought you meant first name ONLY, and ruled him out, since Ted Tonks is mentioned by full name later. *sighs* Eh, whatever.

Cuisine? Yummy...speaking of which...I'm hungry...perhaps there's a restaraunt nearby that serves foods mentioned in Harry Potter...

Arg. That was a nasty question. Where did you find these theories, Heather and Kelpie?

Is the next question going to be PMed to all of us tomorrow or do we still have to contact Heather? I think it makes more sense to send everyone the question at the same time...

Each test will challenge a different talent or area of knowledge.  I had complaints that the trivia questions were too easy, so these test are challenging.  I actually had been toying with the "Ted" question for a while - I thought it might spur some interesting discussion in the SS.

Just a reminder that today is the last day to take your Tri-Wizard test.  I haven't received requests from several of the champions.  If you do not compete in Round II, you are not eligible to compete in subsequent rounds.

Results of the Second Test in the Tri-Wizard Tournament

The second test was:

Quote
rom whom does Harry get these?

Makes 9 large or 12 medium cakes.

225g self-raising flour (or plain flour, plus 1 tsp baking powder)
115g butter or margerine (you can reduce this to 75g if you wish)
1/2 tsp fine salt
1/2 tsp mixed spice
50g caster sugar
115g mixed dried fruit (Granny used 75g sultanas but I like a lot of fruit in mine)
1 large egg
2 tbsp milk
3 tbsp Demerara sugar (for sprinkling)

Preheat the oven to 200C/Gas Mark 6. Grease a large baking sheet.

Sift the flour, salt and mixed spice together in a medium bowl. Cut the butter into small chunks and rub it into the flour until it has the consistency of large crumbs.

Stir in the sugar and dried fruit. Beat the egg and milk together.

Pour the egg mixture evenly over the flour/fruit mixture in the bowl. Using a round-bladed knife (e.g. a butter knife), blend the mixtures together to form a rough dough.

Using the knife, dollop portions of dough onto the baking sheet. They'll fall off the knife in a rather rough fashion - resist the urge to smooth them out! Make sure to leave 5cm between the mounds as they will spread when baked. Sprinkle each mound with plenty of Demerara sugar. This gives both good crunch and shine when baked.

Bake in the centre of the oven for 15 minutes - smaller cakes will take about 12 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack immediately and let cool fully before eating. Best eaten within 2 days!

For 15 points, identify the dish above and from whom Harry received it.

This is a recipe for rock cakes; Hagrid gave Harry rock cakes.

The following champions correctly completed the test earning 15 points:

Kelpie
Madeline
Tiamat
Ping
Angelina Tonks

Carolyn also gets 10 points for submitting the test question.  If any non-competitors have any test suggestions, you can earn 10 points if your test is used.  Feel free to PM me your test suggestions.

Hint for the third test - study www. jkrowling.net

I am slammed at work this week, so I will start taking requests for the five day period beginning on Saturday.

Alright, where on earth would one find a recipe for rock cakes?  Do they exist in real life?  I always assumed they were made up by JKR.

No, I got mine from a google search and ended up on an ivillage page, and the recipe was similar. I had a feeling it was rock cakes, but I wasn't sure. Then I went on the hp-lexicon and searched for rock cakes or something ;D
Hmm, we've got to study jkr's site, have we? This sounds like it's going to be a good question...

Arg. I'm so mad. It definitely sounded alot like the recipe for fruit cake. The only thing that made it seem weird was the eat within two days part. But I'm glad that we don't have a test thins week because I don't think I would have been able to get on again in time to answer within 24 hours....

Ping - I am just there for the day (hopefully), but will be back up there in October for the trial.  My plan is to hit D.C. during that time.  We need to have a mini-Hogwarts get together at that time.  I think Jim will come too, so y'all can meet him as well.  I will see if I can spring Carolyn from law school to get her to help with my trial and bring her along.

Today is the last day to request your Tri-Wizard Tournament test.  Only 4 people have taken their test to date.  Remember that if you don't take the test, you are not eligible to advance to the forth round (which is the final round).  I will be in depositinos today, so there may be a lag in me getting you your test, so the 24 hour rule will be flexible today.

Thanks!

Tri-Wizard Tournament Results:

The last test was (for 10 points each):

Which creature's hair is spun into an Invisibility
Cloak?

Demiguise.

In terms of the "Harry Potter" timeline, when did
Hagrid's expulsion from Hogwarts occur in relation to
Dumbledore's defeat of Grindelwald?  (5 points if you
can answer if it was before or after; 10 points if you
can give the number of years before or after).

Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts in 1942, three years before Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945 (think about that for a while as it relates to Voldemort and Grindelwald - Riddle was in his fifth year at Hogwarts when Hagrid was expelled).

In his unnatural quest to achieve immortality,
Voldemort used three different potions/magical
substances of which we know.  Please identify these
potions/magical substances.

Voldemort used (1) unicorn blood, (2) a potion which kept him alive from the time Wormtail returned to him until he could be reborn (it consisted of unicorn blood and snake venom milked from Nagini), (3) and a potion to restore him to his body (June 24 1995: bone of his father, blood of his enimy, flesh of his servant).

Kelpie, you're my hero!

And nicely done to Ping as well.  ;D

Hmm. I hate to arguementative, but I believe that Hagrid was expelled in the spring of 1943, rather than 1942. My reasoning on this one is that the beginning of Harry's second year is 1992, as dated by Nick's Death Day Party. The second half of the year would then be 1993, and 50 years earlier would be 1943. Since Hagrid was framed and expelled near the end of the term that would be the year 1943, two years before Dumbledore's defeat of Grindelwald in 1945. Right?

Arrrg! I would have got it right if I had just looked it up instead of being so sure I had it right.

Oh well. Congratulations, Kelpie! Job well done.  ;D

AYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAAYAYYA!!!!!!!!!!!!! I won! Thanks everyone. And thanks Ping for the new title. This is great. It was so hard answering all of these questions, because I was most of the time away when we had to answer: the first question, I answered from my house in Hong Kong, so that wasn't bad, but the second time, I was in an internet cafe in Japan (Kyoto), the third in my uncles house in Belgium, and the third in an internet cafe in Paris. So, even though I think that all of you did a superb job, I am still sort of proud of myself having managed to win...
Thanks for the congrats everyone!

Heather, the spot on the Lexicon where I found the years DID say 1943.  It must say 1942 somewhere else, though.  Odd, that.  You'd expect the Lexicon not to contradict itself.

Not that it would make any difference about the champion.  Just a few of us would get another five points.  *shrugs*

Well, you know, 50 years is a round number.  It could mean 50 school years rather than calendar years, for example.  In that instance, either 42 or 43 would fit.

In reliance on the Lexicon and differing dates, Mad gets an additional five points.
