Football Match
« on: March 15, 2003, 07:07:10 PM »

Ok, for those you who don't know anything about

muggle football the first thing we need is postions. There are 11 players on each team. I tend to like the 4, 3, 3 formation.

4 Forwards - the

offensive playes, usually in the opposing teams side of the field trying to score.

3 Midfielders - the workhorses of the team, they support both

the offense and defense, usally they help get the ball downfield to the forwards.

3 Fullbacks - the defensive players, their job is to keep the

opposing team's forwards from getting close enought to the goal to score

Keeper - the last line of defense in football, much the same as a

Keeper in Quidditch, only he has one goal to defend instead of three, but it's a much bigger goal. He's also the only one who can use his hands to touch

the ball.

Obviously if you don't have enough players for a full 11 player team, you can just get back...just keep the ratios even, or you could

get rid of the forwards and have the midfielders play more offense.

Anyway, I usually play center fullback, so I'll take that position on one

team.

Key rule:  you cannot touch the ball

with your hands or arms unless you are the keeper!  AND NO MAGIC!!  Everyone who's is going to play will need to check in their wands before

getting on the field.  Also, you probably want to forego the robes for shorts and t-shirts.

I spent 11 years as keeper and/or fullback, so will be

glad to take either/both of those positions again.  I've also played midfield (halfback, where I grew up) and could do that, too, though since I've been living

in the magical world completely, my lungs and legs aren't what they used to be.

Whoo! I love football! I play keeper

mostly, but I play a bit of everything. How are we going to divide the teams up?

I enjoy playing keeper in quidditch, but would also not mind running around a lot, which I'm told midfielders do.

With the number of active people around, you

can play both, Ping.

I'm signing up for permission to sit on the sidelines and laugh at everyone. It's like...negative cheerleading, you know? I

just don't have the figure for positive cheerleading ;)

Oooo, I love soccer. My new

soccer coach just called today, and I'm on a new loser team and I'm mad though. Not more undefeated soccer team. *fumes* I mean football. I'm play

offense, so can I be right wing?

Muggle games?  This

should be interesting.  I generally play Chaser in Quidditch, so I'm guessing I might want to be a forward?

If we can't touch the ball with our

hands, how do we move it around?  How do we get it in the goal?  *smiles at the gigantic rectangular goal*

*smacks forehead*

Of

course!  Well, you can use any other part of your body other than hands and arms, but generally, you use your feet and legs.  It's really quite quaint:

kicking a ball with your feet and letting it roll on the ground.  Kick some more, roll, kick some more, roll.  The secret is to try to maintain control of

the ball, so you don't want to kick it so far away that you have to run to catch up with it.

Did you put that in there Tia? This is supposed

to be a muggle game. No magic! ...Now maybe we should work on some skills. *pulls out a ball that hasn't been tampered with and begins juggling (for

Ping watches in utter fascination. Then she

tries it herself, but the ball keeps going off in odd directions. "Are you SURE that ball hasn't been tampered with?"

It takes a bit to get used to

juggling. And considering Tia is around I'm not all that sure the ball hasn't been tampered with...it will probably explode on you in 5

seconds.

*Cho watches as a look of fear flashes

over Ping's face*

Now, Verk, don't tease our Minister of Magic.  She's overworked.

*pats Ping on the head*

He's just

playing with you, Minister.  The ball hasn't been tampered with, see?

*holds ball out to Ping, who is about to grab it when, suddenly, the ball

begins to shake and jerk on its own in the air.  Ping and Cho both pull back immediately and back away slowly as the possessed soccer ball rises

further and further into the air*

"He's not a ghost,

After watching Verk with amazement and something like disappointment, Mad

seems a bit glad as she watches the ball float out of sight.

"Quidditch anyone?" she asks hopefully.

As Tia moves behind Verk and shoves him toward the ball, the high pitched humming becomes louder and the ball's shuddering and shaking becomes more pronounced.  All stand transfixed as clouds of steam begin to emanate from the ball's seams.  Just as someone yells, "Hit the deck!" (which everyone obediently does and promptly buries their heads in their arms) the ball explodes and, after the smoke and debris clear away, all raise their heads in awe to look upon....

She sat down on the grass and watched as Tia continued to examine the bits of ball that were left on the ground.

*smiles innocently at Cho* Would you

believe I was running a study on the consequences of mixing magic and muggle artifacts? Would you believe it wasn't supposed to blow up?

/>
Ah well. *gives the dirt a final kick and turns away, still ignoring the blackened Verkolak*

*pulls her wand out of her sleeve and makes

a few passes. Her broomstick pops into existence a hundred feet away and shoots straight toward her at about ninety miles an hour, despite the fact that

it looks like it was used for a game of tug-o-war with a pit-bull*

Slow down, darn you! Stop! *the broom screeches to a halt and drops

unceremoniously to the floor. She kicks it a couple times and it slowly rises into the air again* Piece of junk. I don't know why I keep it.

/>*hops on to the broom and sits side-saddle, hovering* Well, it's better than the ground, anyway.

So, now that we've confirmed that we're a

bunch of close-minded magic-users with no taste for land-bound games, does someone know how to play anything besides Quidditch?

Uh... I think I heard of a muggle

game once. My parents used to watch it all the time, but I never got into it. It was called basebat or batball... or something... basically they throw a ball

at you, and you hit it with a stick, and then you run around the bases... or something... I don't know. Anyone up for chess?

The blackened Verkolak,

who has spent the last few minutes struggling to not let loose with any of the Dark Arts, finally calms down enough to walk off the field, possibly to rejoin

the hunt for the cow in the Slytherin's common room. Smoke still rises from his head, it is difficult to tell if it's from the explosion or his

temper.

That's baseball Shelly. It's fun to

watch, but hard to play. If we really want to try a Muggle sport, how about something a little easier? Kickball is like baseball, sort of, but you kick it,

instead of using a bat. Or we could try to use the Beater clubs and give baseball a try.

"We could play keep-away from

Verk on broomsticks," sniggered Cho, watching the steam hover over his head.

"What's all this

about kicking???  Don't Muggles play any games where they use their hands??"  Mad sighs.  She is feeling an odd sort of impairment for never

having lived around Muggles, and her competitive side doesn't like it.

Muggles do play fascinating games with thier hands...it's called 'politics'. *rolls eyes* Don't worry, Mad, you're not missing anything by not associating with muggles.

Ah....or so I've heard. I wouldn't stoop that low myself. Um.

lover? Thats a foul thing to say! *hmph* Slytherins....

Well, if we're not going to play anything, then I say we go for a swim in the lake.

uhm, if it means anything weve

conjured up another soccer ball. And this one has spell on it that returns all trap spells to their caster.
