The Ministry of Magic / Registration disabled
« on: June 11, 2011, 01:11:50 PM »
In this era of cutbacks and austerity, the MoM has decided to reduce the amount of muggle registrations it rejects by shutting down registration of new members until it can find a way to ensure that only wizards are being allowed into Hogsmeade.

The Ministry of Magic / Sorting hat down
« on: April 22, 2008, 09:06:20 AM »
The Sorting Hat is currently out of order. Not sure when I'll have time to fix it, but I will try and get to it sometime this week.

The Shrieking Shack (Spoilers) / Seventh film split
« on: March 13, 2008, 09:43:25 AM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7293513.stm

"The seventh and final Harry Potter book will be adapted for the big screen in two parts, Warner Bros has confirmed."

I'm actually not pleased with this. Yeah, there's a lot of stuff to put in, but dude, if they'd not excised some of the important stuff from the first films, it wouldn't be such a scramble! And how on earth do you make it two complete stories? It's going to just have some lame cliff-hanger ending none of the fans will care about because they've all read the book already.

Um...imo, of course. :)

The Ministry of Magic / Downtime
« on: November 05, 2007, 08:04:48 AM »
Sorry for the extended weekend downtimes. The web host has been having severe problems. Hopefully they're sorted out. In the meantime, I'm searching for alternate options, because I'm tired of the problems.

Hogwarts (No Spoilers) / Sirius's death?
« on: July 20, 2007, 10:45:30 AM »
I would just look this up myself, but a couple of my books are still at my old place, so I can't.

What spell did Bellatrix use on Sirius? I have this idea in my head that it was some sort of energy bolt thing, but because
the movie has her using avada kevadra
, I have started to doubt my own memory. Can anyone look this up for me?

Not that my speculation based on this point isn't going to be resolved starting at midnight, but still...

The Shrieking Shack (Spoilers) / Neville's memory?
« on: June 14, 2007, 01:33:35 PM »
Poor Neville. His memory is notoriously bad, and there's been indication from Jo that this might be because of it being magically wiped in the past.

What if Neville was the other person at the Potter's that night?

I don't know if that's possible at all, because why would he be having a play-date with Harry when Harry's parents were on the run, but .... well, it occurred to me, so I thought I'd pass it along. :)

The Three Broomsticks / Back from Bangkok
« on: April 25, 2007, 11:26:04 AM »
Jet lag is a bear, I must say, even with Melatonin. As is 17+ hours in a middle seat on an airplane. Ungh.

The Shrieking Shack (Spoilers) / Due Date
« on: February 01, 2007, 10:25:10 AM »
The book is scheduled to be out July 21st. I'm excited and sad at the same time. I mean, the last Harry Potter book. Ever.  :o

The Three Broomsticks / Don't want to move again
« on: January 09, 2007, 04:27:12 PM »
It seems like I'm always moving. I hate moving. But I have to do it again. The roommate is getting married on Feb 2nd, so I need to be gone by around then. I've looked at a couple of places, but the first one I didn't get a "we'll get along vibe" from the girls already there. The second is still a possibility, but the person who'll get back to me said in the next week or two. So I'm still looking. *sigh* Anybody know a good bridge to sleep under in Falls Church?  ???

The Shrieking Shack (Spoilers) / Now for the real fun
« on: December 21, 2006, 03:50:52 PM »
After recovering from the shock of finally knowing the final title, it's time to get silly!  O0

Harry Potter and the:

Deadly Mallows
Deathly Swallows

The Shrieking Shack (Spoilers) / Book 7 title (spoilers)
« on: December 21, 2006, 10:39:22 AM »
So, the book 7 title is official "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Hallows? I don't know that I've ever seen that used as a noun before.

Websters has it as a transitive verb:
1 : to make holy or set apart for holy use
2 : to respect greatly

What do you think it means? Ghosts, perhaps?

Talk about cryptic.

The Ministry of Magic / More changes
« on: December 14, 2006, 12:55:20 PM »
The stars have aligned so that the mod I've wanted to use and the version of SMF available both match. So I've got some changes planned. It'll probably be slow, as these things often are. So bear with me. And as always, let me know if you have any problems. :)

The Ministry of Magic / Change in registration
« on: August 18, 2006, 09:12:16 AM »
We've gotten a couple of scammer/spammer registrants lately, so I'm upping the steps required to register. This shouldn't affect current users, just those who want to join in the future. I am going to require them to activate their accounts, and administrators will get an email when people register. This should help me keep better track of this.

Thanks,
-the MoM

The Great Hall / Hufflepuff wins!
« on: August 08, 2006, 10:15:45 AM »
Hufflepuff has won the House Cup! By just two points, they squeaked past Slytherin.

Totals have been reset. The next cup will finish at the end of September.

I would change the layout of this board to reflect the winners, but I'm a slacker and haven't updated the theme. :)

The Three Broomsticks / Moving, etc
« on: July 21, 2006, 10:35:07 AM »
I'm just about done with the move, minus a few more of the big things and then the cleaning. Unpacking is going to take a long time, especially if I don't see the roommate enough for us to rearrange the furniture! :D

The cable hook-up should occur today so that I can get my home internet up and running. Woot!

All will mostly be well and calm, except for two things.

One: The landlady may give us grief.

Two: I may be going to Libya next week.

Eeep.

Hogwarts (No Spoilers) / Books and movies?
« on: July 17, 2006, 11:48:18 AM »
HP1 was on TV last night, so I was watching it while procrastinating packing. I still think Rupert totally stole the movie. Such a cutie. :D

Anyways, does anyone find that their images or perceptions of characters has changed with the movies? Ron in my head is still the little Hispanic kid he will always be (loooong story), and most of the others seem fairly fixed already, but am I the only one that keeps this firm? I admit with LOTR I have a harder time clinging to my original imaginings, since the casting was in many cases quite brillaint. Do you guys have this problem with HP?

The Ministry of Magic / Input on the layout
« on: February 14, 2006, 08:32:39 AM »
I've had this up a couple of months now, and I kinda like the colors, but I'm partial to blue. If we keep the colors, I could easily adapt graphics for it and such. But what do you think?

The Three Broomsticks / Smoke damage
« on: January 06, 2006, 06:14:20 PM »
Our townhouse has smoke damage from a fire next door. So I'm going to be away for a while, probably. I have no real big clue about how life will go from here. It'll take me a while to get back sane again. So probably I won't be getting around to updating the colors of the layout for a while.

The Ministry of Magic / Upgrade problem
« on: January 01, 2006, 11:18:39 AM »
There've been some problems with the upgrade. I have to redo the themes. Once that's done, I'll award the house cup.

The Three Broomsticks / Lumos
« on: January 01, 2006, 10:47:53 AM »
Just started listing to the muggle and potter casts, and the Leaky Mug talked about this particular event:

Grab your broom, set your Portkey, or prepare to Apparate! From July 27-30, 2006, Las Vegas, Nevada is the place to be for Harry Potter fans near and far as we gather to attend Lumos 2006: A Harry Potter Symposium. Following our theme of "Back to School," we are planning a variety of daytime academic presentations and panels, including special workshops for educators and librarians. In the evenings, we'll be having fun with an assortment of activities, including Water Quidditch, Hogwarts Night Classes, and Live Chess.

Prepare to be completely immersed in the world of Harry Potter. Our host hotel will be decorated Hogwarts-style, with a "Great Hall," a "Common Room" for all houses, and a library for those wishing to emulate our favorite bushy-haired witch. We'll also enjoy British food and butterbeer throughout the symposium.

This sounds like lots of fun. $180 registration not so much, though. Well, maybe a miracle will happen and I'll win a lottery I never entered and be able to afford to go. :)

The Ministry of Magic / Upgrade and apologies
« on: November 25, 2005, 04:32:22 PM »
I've just finished upgrading the forum and themes. If you notice any problems, please let me know.

Also, there may be some of you that have taken the sorting hat and not yet been put into your houses. I'm sorry. I will try to take care of this once I'm back home (in a couple of days).

The Three Broomsticks / Cincinnati
« on: October 28, 2005, 05:31:08 PM »
I will be in this city next week. If anyone lives close enough to meet me and eat dinner, and if said person or persons are interested in such an activity, let me know :D

I won't be MIA, hopefully, because I'll have a connection at the hotel, but my days will probably be pretty crammed.

Madame Puddifoot's Tea Shop / New avatar competition!
« on: October 20, 2005, 09:02:54 AM »
So, I promised I would do this, and so I really am now.

This time, I'm not going to give an image, but rather a theme. The theme: winter. The images should have some aspect of winter in them. They don't have to focus on winter, but should have winter in them somehow.

Images can be from the movies or even the illustrations from the books, if you can find anything relevant.

The contest will end Nov. 7th. (I'd do it the week before, but I'll be out of town and I don't yet know how much of a net connection I'll have then.)

The Great Hall / Hufflepuff takes the cup! Again!
« on: October 20, 2005, 08:49:41 AM »
You know, I wonder sometimes if other Harry Potter boards ever manage to get active Hufflepuffs.... :)

Hufflepuff: 140/2=70
Gryffindor: 140/3=46.666...
Ravenclaw: 0
Slytherin: 0

Of special note: Christine earned 77 points this cup, more than half of the total for Hufflepuff!

And, erm, I'll try to be better about this. Next cup will be Oct-Dec. Really.  :-[

The Three Broomsticks / After the movies?
« on: October 16, 2005, 12:40:17 PM »
It seems clear that WB is going to be keeping the same actors for the film, even though they're now much older than the dynamic trio in the books. Whether you think this is a good decision for the movies or not, what do you think it means for the actors themselves? Will Dan, Emma, and Rupert be able to find other sorts of jobs after this? Or will they fall into the horrible spiral most child actors seem caught in?

The Ministry of Magic / Have you heard about...?
« on: September 20, 2005, 10:08:01 AM »
There's a lot going on in the world of Harry Potter, and in the muggle world relating to all things Harry Potter. I can't keep on top of it all by myself, but I asked a friend of mine at the Daily Prophet to help us out, and you can see the results by clicking on the "News" button up above. I've only found two RSS feeds that focus on Harry Potter news (Leaky Cauldron and HPANA), and I've included both of them, so there might be a bit of cross-over. I'm only keeping the last 20 or so items up, but each article's title links to the original entry on the site, so you can always scroll through past news that way.

If you notice any problems with it, please let me know. I hope you enjoy it, and that this adds to some of the lagging conversation around here. (Which is not to say that I'm not more than a little guilty of it myself.)  ^-^

The Great Hall / House cup extended
« on: September 19, 2005, 05:07:33 AM »
I'm going to extend the Jul/Aug cup to the Jul-Sep cup, since it's been slow. The next cup will also be a three-month run.

BTW, if you have taken the sorting hat and I haven't put you in a house yet, please let me know via PM.  :dumbledore:

The Shrieking Shack (Spoilers) / Bizarre theories
« on: July 23, 2005, 11:38:54 PM »
I think it's probably that JKR's just-posted interview shoots this down, but it made me laugh. Have you seen other theories that seem bizarre but that you want to talk about anyway? :)

Quote
Just remember that JKR doesn't throw stuff out and not make something of
it later.  So here's my take on book 6 which we'll all have to wait
about 2 years to see if I properly interpreted the clues -- I think
Snape told Dumbledore the whole plan of what Voldemort planned Draco to
do.....What can Snape do? --brew a potion that can put a stopper in
death....Dumbledore can do many things as he is one of the greatest
wizards of the time & he defeated the bad wizard Grindelwald.  He can do
spells wo/wands & he knows more about magic & the ancient magic than
anybody else......Plus he was pretty spry when he disarmed Harry - not
really all that feeble...

I think he faked his own death w/the aid of Snape & he had to immobilize
Harry to keep him from interfering with "the plan" -- maybe that's why
Dumbledore is sleeping in his portrait in his "old" office & not
awake.....At the funeral his body was shrouded & then went up in flames
to become a tomb....hmmmmmmmmm....so maybe he isn't really gone....But
they needed it to look real to the outside world -- so that the folks
who were closest to Dumbledore would show real sorrow & loss.  That way
anyone using legilimens on them would know/believe that Dumbledore was
truly gone....This way Dumbledore could continue to look for the
horcruxs without anyone wondering where he was going....Maybe we'll get
to see more of Aberforth....

Well that's what I was thinking....
